Media Literacy Question of the Day

Media Literacy Question of the Day

How might an advertiser indirectly describe the qualities of a product in a television commercial? Describe some examples where you have seen this technique used in advertising. Why do you think that advertisers might want to use this technique?

  1. An advertiser would describe the qualities of a product in a television commercial by saying the good things about it such as, it has internet connection so you wouldn't have to find a connection, that's only if your talking about something that has internet in it, such as an IPhone or an Ipod touch. Then they will start talking about the bad things about it which would be, how much it costs. For me, my parents get really picky about the price. And i'm pretty sure this happens with most of your parents too. An example i've seen was when they were showing the Ipad on T.V. It sounded like so much fun until they announced the price of it. Some of the good things they said about it was that you could go on internet, play a whole bunch of games, have face chats, take pictures/upload pictures onto your computer, and it helps a lot with your homework. It is also really good for you if you have a job that needs a computer or a lot of research. I think the advertisers would want to use this technique because usually when people see how great it is, they would ignore the price which would lead to more people buying their product and getting more money for their factories or where ever they work.

  2. An advertiser might indirectly describe the qualities of something by sound, texture, taste or back round. An example would be chips. They sometimes don't say the qualities but they show them. ( When they bight the chip it might be crunchy so we know indirectly that its a crunchy chip.)

  3. Nowadays advertising is a very important strategy in marketing or selling a product, advertisers try their hardest to promote their products, or at least try to get people taking about it.
I think in this video advertisers tried to promote their service/product by showing techniques by using the internet and technology because technology is in our daily lives and we use it everyday, and maybe more people would be attracted to an advertisement if it was based on technology or has something they can at least relate to.

  5. People use technology everyday and I think that since they do the advertising people want to show off their product in technology using attractive things that will get people to like their product or at least tell other people that it's good, because they can relate to the technology used daliy and the way they put their product on sale, or on the market, because everyone uses technology everyday.

  6. they try to reel you in by telling you the good qualaties about the product and then quickly say the bad things about the product. I think they do this because they don't want the person to but the product to get money.
They don't want you to get a visual on the down side of the product because then you wont buy it.

  7. The advertiser would describe the qualities of a product on a television commercial by making the commercial look tempting, for example in activia commercials the actor who is eating the yogurt eats it slow and makes sure that the audience can see how good it looks and how much weight they lost eating it. Advertisers might use this technique to get people to loose more weight easier and buy the "good looking" yogurt. "ACTIVIAAAAAA" :D

  8. They might show people our age or celebrities having / wearing the product.Compare it to a similar product.Having more than 2 products in the commercial.

In the music video Telephone by Lady gaga she has some subtle but to the point advertising ex. the coca cola in her hair like rollers that are subtle, making us want to by it .
ex. when you get to the cashier there's a lot of candy , gum and magazines .Those are a type of advertising becuase it is very impulsive and you are enticed to buy it . Which is the main goal of the advertisers.

I think they would use this technique because most people zone out in a commercial when they just name things and compare things about the product but if its subtle people are bound to notice and be enticed to get the product.

A advertiser might indirectly describe the qualities of a product in a television commercial by giving some of the qualities in there commercial, such as ect. picture with captions to discribe them, quotes related to the topic, celebrities, and lots of others that would very by the topic of the commercial. An exsample of this would be the Chrysler 200 commercial, this has a celebrity and facts about the car in the commercial, but the difference about this commercial to this commercial compared to commercials that areindirectly describing is that the meaning of this is to make people buy the car.

  10. Advertizers might do this by not saying directly to you they kind of hide it in a way they like show you a scene were it is being used and then after they will tell you the product. And I have seen this done with something that I don't remember the name of but the kids are trying to play hide and seek but the house is so neat that there is no where to hide. I think they might do this because it may have a more effective outcome instead of just saying directly what the good things are about the product.

  11. In the scrubbing bubbles commercial for a bathroom cleaning product they show the bubbles doing all the work. They then show the women leaving the bathroom fast and implies that she has more free time to do more things other than clean. It shows her spending time with her family. I think they use this technique to show you all the other things products can do for you like the bubbles give you more time to do other things than clean and this makes their product better than the others.

AN advertiser might show a bar graph to show results that their product is better, by comparing different products to their own. I have seen this technique used in toothpaste commercials, where they are comparing crest with colgate. Also, they do this with Coke and Pepsi seeing which one is better. They can be the same product, but if one looks better or the commercial is presented better, customers will buy this one instead. Advertisers use this technique so they can reassure customers that their product is the best, even with all the other products out there that are the exact same.
