Homework Response

Today we read an article about the demise of Lance Armstrong.

What reasons can you suggest why some athlete's dope/ use performance enhancing drugs? Why do other's choose not to dope.

What advice would you give to athletes regarding the use of banned substances and methods to increase their athletic performance?

If everybody else in a sport is using PEDS, is it cheating? Should it be allowed? Explain.

  1. I think some athletes use performance enhancing drugs to win. And they use PEDS, to win for their fans, because some anthletes don't like disapointing their fans.
Some athletes choose not to use performance enhancing drugs because they know the risks of using PEDS, and know it's not right and that it's cheating.

The advice I would give to athletes who are thinking about using banned substances and methods to increase their athletic performance is to never use drugs to give them an unfair advantage, because it is cheating, and what's worse than disapointing your fans because you didn't win something is disapointing them because you cheated.
Although you might think that some athletes can easily get away with using drugs, that isn't true. Someone will find out if you did use drugs and you can lose everything. You can lose fans, sponsors and you will also be pressed with charges. It's better to do something fairly but not winning, then winning but cheating to win.

If everybody else in a sport is using PEDS, I think it would still be considered as cheating because when an athlete uses PEDS, it is giving them the chance to go beyond their ability. Beyond the best that they could do.
If every athelte were to do that, then every proffessional athlete would be given a chance to go beyond the best that they could do and beyond their true ability. That's still cheating because even though all athletes were to use drugs to help them, it's still not the athlete's true ability that helped them win.

Most of the reason they would win is because of the drugs, not their skill.
That is also why I think that all athletes using drugs shouldn't be allowed.

  2. 1. I think some athletes dope because they don't think that there natural abilities so they want to be better but instead of training hard they decided to cheat and use steroids. Others choose not to because they can handle all of the hard work and deal the extra time you have to put in to be faster and/or stronger.

    2. The advice I would want to give to the athletes that used banned substances would be that it isn't really needed to cheat in any meaning. If you really want to to get better in the sport you are playing you need to put aside everything and really set a goal that you will train and train until you get the improvement you want.

    3. If every athlete in the sport industry was using PEDS I would still call it cheating because no one knows how much doses each athlete is getting/using so if one person was using PEDS 10 times and another athlete only used it twice there still is some sort of advantage.
