Response

This is Canadian Ryder Hesjedal, after a hard stage 9 of the Giro D'Italia.
He struggled in this stage and finished +2:09.
The race leader Vincenzo Nibali is -3:11 to Hesjedal.
What do these numbers mean? Explain.

  1. I think +/- means that when you got minus you beat someone in the race and when you got plus you lost to someone by the time that it says.

  2. I think they're trying to say is that Vincezo Nibali is 3:11 seconds or minutes ahead of Ryder Hysjedal. -SARIK

  3. I think that these numbers mean that the positives are worth more than the negatives as usual because the more time that you take to finish a race, the more farther behind you are. So I think that since the leader of the race is -3:11 to Hesjedal, I think that means that he finished the race 3 minutes and 11 seconds faster than Hesjedal because Hesjedal obviously finished with a longer time than Nibali, so i think that the - means that you subtract the 3:11 from from Hesjadel's time to get Nibali's time. I think that since 'he struggled in this stage', and finished +2:09, that means that maybe he finished 2 minutes and 9 seconds after the time most cyclists finished their race, so that also means that he was behind.

  4. I think it means the time they come in like if they come early the minus that much but if you come late they add or more minutes or seconds. So i think negatives are better then positives in bikes races.

  5. I'm not really sure what these numbers mean, but I think, from reading the imformation that was given, that these numbers are the added time or less time than their last time doing a bike race. The reason why I think this is because it says 'after a hard stage 9 of the the Giro D'Italia", I think that maybe there were other stages, meaning other races. It also said that Ryan Hesjedal struggled in this stage and finished +2:09, I think when it meant by struggled, it meant that he had a bit of trouble in this stage, and maybe added 2:09 minutes to his original time.
It also says that the race leader Vincenzo Nibali was -3:11 to Hesjedal. Usually leaders are the best ones out of the teams, so I think that maybe Vincenzo got 3:11 less than Hesjedal's time.
