CNN Student News Response

According to a recent medical study, the percent of caffeine overdoses that occurred in young people in 2007 was over 50%. In your opinion, what factors may have contributed to this statistic? How has the beverage industry responded to this study? Use A.P.E.S in your response.

  1. I think that this has happened because the teens have got ahold of parents drinks and drugs then have pressured their peers into trying them with him/her.

  2. The factors that might of contributed to the statistic would be that pop, energy drinks and other drinks are selling more so that would help contribute to the study. Also kids are getting bigger each year witch will also contribute to the study. The beverage industry has came out with caffeine free pop to try and stop the issue.

  3. I think somethings that may have contributed to the caffeine overdose is the fact that there are so many enegry drinks that have caffeine in them. Some people think that when they drink energy drinks they are better at sports. So they would go and try to get high on those drinks. Some people may not know how much caffeine there is in those drinks so they may think that it is good for them to drink as much as they want. I think that the beverage industrys should try and make more drinks with less caffeine. And that they should also include a sticker or something that tells people not to have more than a certian amount of their drink all at one time. This way the beverage industry would still make more money and there would be less of a chance of people who get caffeine overdose.

  4. In my opinion the factors that have contributed to this problem are that grown ups drink alot of coffee which has a lot of caffeine and children always want to take after and look up to their parents so that may make them want to copy the exact things their parents do, also that the flavour makes it taste good like in pop so kids want to drink it. The industry has responded to this by not doing anything in my opinion but they are I think trying to use less cafeine.

  5. I think that younger kids watch bigger kids and adults drink pop and cofee so they try a little bit and get addicted so they drink more and more. Also more kids start to drink cofee(Which has lots of caffine)and again get addicted to cofee.
I think that pop and cofee industries might try to lower the amount of caffine just so the people 19 and under won't get caffine overdosed as much.

  6. I think this was because that companies like coke are putting out commercials and adds that will appeal to kids so they will want to buy that kind of stuff. As of now they are making diet drinks which have less caffene but I think they should make drinks with no caffene.

Factors that have contributed to this statistic are that on T.V there have been commercials about energy drinks with celebreties so students under 19 choose to buy and drink it.Adults might not have time to exercise so they get themselfs coffee or energy drinks to get pumped up.The beverage industry mentioned that young adults getting coffee from popular coffeehouses are getting about twice as much caffeine as they would from a similar size energy drink. So obviously the beverage industry is pretty conserned about this situation.

  8. In my opinion, the factors that may have contibuted to this statistic are causing death by vital sickness and can cause more obesity for children if it's an everyday thing. In the CNN Student News it said it could cause dizziness, rapid heart rate, and nausea which is a really bad stomach ache. The Beverage industry has responded with facts on caffiene such as how a lot of drinks have caffeine in them and young adults getting coffee from popular coffeehouses are getting twice as much caffiene as they would from a similar sized energy drink. ( cough, cough) Mr. Mousseau!!!!

  9. Some factors that may have contributed to this statistic are that the drink tastes good, or is addictive because caffeine is known to be slightly addictive. The American Beverage Association responded by saying that a lot of drinks that the public buys has caffeine in it and that when young adults go to a coffee shop (like Tim Hortons) they are are getting "about twice as much caffeine as they would from a similar sized energy drink".

Well, in my opinion teens and young adults drink way to much pop, coffee and bevreges with LOTS of caffeine. From personal expierences,I would know. When I was in Grade.5, was driven to school every day so on my way to school my dad woould take my to Starbucks and i would get a CaféMocha and there % of caffeine I wouldnt even imagin. Also I find that we can fix these problems if we all work together, because beverage industrys can limit the caffeine intake by putting less caffeine in there beverages!

  11. I think some things that add to the number of caffeine overdoses are things that include caffeine such as chocolate, pop and , coffee and tea. I think this because people drink tea and coffee everyday , and it has become more necessary as a daily routine and people may be addicted to it, because some people drink it quite frequently.

  12. I think some factors that may have contributed to th number of caffeine overdoses, are foods and drinks that include caffeine such as chocolate, (hot chocolate), soft drinks (ex. Coke, Pepsi,Mountain Dew, etc), and obviously , coffee and tea (certain types of tea only). I also think that it has become more important in adults (more than kids) days, and to drink coffee can also be addiction. (ex. Mr, M) ;D

  13. Hey Mr.M,
Caffeine gives you energy and seems to be good to drink, but when you drink too much it will get very addiciting. Young people would drink alot to be fresh for a new day or some would drink coke or energy drinks as a normal drink every day.(ex. you drink water)

  14. Some factors that may have contributed to this statistic may include the following
Most young people are not educated about caffeine or aware of the caffeine content of products (ex a 12 ounce bottle of Mountain Dew contains 54mg of caffeine)
Another reason could be that the caffeinated drinks packaging are appealing which makes us want to buy them and we are also fooled by other things that we don’t really pay attention to how much caffeine it contains.
Many companies target their marketing campaigns to appeal to children and youth, through carefully designed advertising campaigns as well as sponsorship of events such as snowboarding and skateboarding competitions which children enjoy, and take the products they see advertised
Many children also usually take a combination of one or more of these products on a daily basis which increases the amount of caffeine in their body .Many people are not aware of the effects and side effects of caffeine on the body
The beverage industry responded by arguing that
The research provided misinformation about energy drinks, their ingredients and the regulatory process.
They claimed that like other foods, beverages and energy drinks and their ingredients are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

They also claimed, most mainstream energy drinks actually contain about half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffeehouse coffee, and that when you get a cup of coffee from a popular coffee house you are getting about twice the amount of caffeine you would from a similar size energy drink.

Children and teens are not large consumers of energy drinks. Most of the cases referred to was from over the counter caffeine tablets and not from food and beverages. They were trying to say that it wasn’t their fault. They also responded by giving the fact about the ratio of pre-teens that consume energy drinks being zero.

  15. Well, in my opinion i think that the overdoses are that high for teens because from my prior knowledge, i know that once teens get old enough to drink coffee the want to drink it like crazy even though they might not be ready for it. so age could be a problem. Also, caffeine causes you not to get to sleep. so their bones have weakened. The beverage industry said that a lot of drinks that you can get have caffeine in them and young adults are getting twice as much caffeine as they would from a normal size drink causing double the problems. They are probably very mad when they saw this because lots of people are going to get laid off their jobs since no one will buy their product anymore.

  16. The percent of caffeine overdoses that occurred in younge people in 207 was over 50% because more and more people are drinking energy drinks, kids that drink Monster or Red Bull have probably been told to try it by an older sibling. Also the adults that don't drink these energy drinks are at risk too because coffee contains caffeine and I know Mr.Mouuseu as well as my dad has a Tim Hortens coffee ever morning. So many of us have a chance of overdosing on caffeine

  17. I think that some other fators that may have contributed to this is that stores sell the drinks to young kids like 10 year olds even though there not suppost to because they want all the money they can get their hands on.

  18. I think the reason why caffeine overdoses are occurring more and more often is because energy drinks are starting give people health problems. The beveragwe industry said that a lot of drinks can have caffeine in them, and young people who get coffee from popular coffeehouses, are geting twice as much caffeine than energy drinks.

  19. I think that is because the media is always advertising products that have a lot of caffeine such as chocolate, soda's, coffee. For example valentine's day. Everyone advertises chocolate's because it is one of the "romantic" things to give on this day, and there very popular, and they get advertised quite a bit in the media. (on billboards, commercials, cars, etc.) Also coffee has a lot of caffeine and most adult's or young adults drink it mostly in the mornings, and of course there's always the new deals, and coupons.
