The Real Story of Valentine's Day

The Story of St. Valentine
In 270 A.D., marriage had been outlawed by the emperor of Rome, Claudius II. Claudius issued this decree because he thought that married men made bad soldiers since they were reluctant to be torn away from their families in the case of war. Claudius had also outlawed Christianity in this time period because he wished to be praised as the one supreme god, the Emperor of Rome. Valentine was the bishop of Interamna during this period of oppression. Valentine thought that the decrees of Rome were wrong. He believed that people should be free to love God and to marry. Valentine invited the young couples of the area to come to him. When they came, Valentine secretly performed services of matrimony and united the couples.

Valentine was eventually caught and was brought before the emperor. The emperor saw that Valentine had conviction and drive that was unsurpassed among his men. Claudius tried and tried to persuade Valentine to leave Christianity, serve the Roman empire and the Roman gods. In exchange, Claudius would pardon him and make him one of his allies. St. Valentine held to his faith and did not renounce Christ. Because of this, the emperor sentenced him to a three-part execution. First, Valentine would be beaten, then stoned, and then finally, decapitated. Valentine died on February 14th, 270 A.D.

While in prison, waiting for his sentence to be carried out, Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter, the blind Asterius. During the course of Valentine's prison stay, a miracle occurred and Asterius regained her sight. Valentine sent her a final farewell note. He signed his last note, "From Your Valentine." Even today, this message remains as the motto for our Valentine's Day celebrations.
What is the main idea of the Valentines Day story?

  1. I think the main idea is that although Claudius threatened Valentine he stood up for what he believed in and stood by it ,even when he was being executed .That is how Valentines day was created in honor of Valentine for not giving up on what he believed in ,even though he had some "haters".

I think that the main idea of the Valentine story is to remember the ones you love, even if it means having a consequence. Saint valentine died for love. Remembering this,we can celebrate our love for others and show them how much we care, because you never know when you'll see them again.

  5. I think that the main idea of the story is that no matter, what you should do what you think is rigth. In the story St. Valentine thought that it was wrong that people were not allowed to be married. So even knowing what would happen to him he continued to marry people because he thought that it was the right thing to do. Even when he could have given up his faith in exchange for his life he chose his faith. This is because it is what he thought was right.

  7. The main idea of this story is to not let go of your faith and to always love. St Valentine was determined to spread joy, but the emperor was oppressing the people and basically not allowing them to fall in love & be happy for his own selfish reasons. He didn't want the soldiers to be distracted and not want to fight. But St Valentine stood up for what he thought was right, and got punished for it.
It was a cute story though. (:

The main idea is that you should never give up on what you believe is right which means to fight for what you believe in and to stand up if you know that something or someone is wrong. Stand up for yourself as Valentine did and believe that you can make a difference. Valentines believed in his faith and that Claudius was wrong so he stood for Rome and he didn’t care about the consciences.

  13. I think the main idea of The Story of St. Valentine is about how Valentine believed in love, because we now, celebrate the day of love on the day he died (Feb. 14), which means he stood up for what he believed in: love, this would have never came to be if Valentine didn't know about love let alone believe in it.

The main idea of the story is to always help and love people no matter what will happen to you if you do it. For example, when valentine was inviting couples over and perfromed services of matrimory and united the couples but later on, he got sent to jail for doing great things.I think that Valentine wanted to have more peace around him so he could help marriages and other people , he also done what was right. ;)

  19. I think the main idea of this Valentine's day story is that don't give up on something if someone tells you not to do it, because Valentine believed in love, and he made up valentine's day, and even when he was threatened, he still believed in love, and loved the jailer's daughter before he died.
