Blogger Response: Figurative Language

Today we learned about similies and metaphors, your task is to research what the definitions for the other four literary devices on the diagram above are. Give an example of each. Post your findings as a comment to this post.

  1. A Hyperbole is an exaggeration. For example:"She's so dumb, she thinks Taco Bell's a mexican phone company."
    An Idiom is an expression, like:"He finished his work in the nick of time."
    An Onomatopoeia is a word that looks like the sound something makes.(Crack,bam,moo,quack.)
    A Personification is taking an inanimate object and giving it qualities of a person. Like, "The stars danced around the sky."

  2. Hyperbole:Is a deliberate exaggeration used for effect.Example:I have a millions things to do.

    Idiom:Is a group of words whose meaning cannot be predicted from the meanings of the constituent words.Example:He's in a big PICKLE.

    Onomatopoeia:Is the the formation of words whose sound is imitative of the sound of the noise.Examples:They were playing cards until there was a big BANG in the basement

    Personification:Is the attribution of human characteristics to things,as for literary or artistic effect: Examples:The tree's were dancing peacefully in the wind.

  3. Hyperbole: A Hyperbole is when you use exaggeration in a sentence. She was so hungry that she she could eat anything.
    Idiom: An Idiom is a use of expression.
    She is pulling my leg, this sentence is an idiom because its an expression or figure of speech.
    Onomatopoeian is when you use the sound of something in a sentence.
    The cat hissed as the dog came closer.
    Personification:
    Personification is when you use the qualities of a person to describe something that isnt human or sometimes not even alive.
    The first rays of morning tiptoed through the meadow.

  4. Simile-A figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared. Example- That snake is as big as a tree.

    Metaphor-A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance . Example-The test was a walk in the park.

    Idiom-An expression whose meanings of its constituent elements.Example-To get out of hand.

    Hyperbole-an extravagant statement or figure of speech not intended to be taken literally.Example-Im so hungry I could eat a horse.

    Onomatopoeia-The use of imitative and naturally suggestive words for dramatic, or poetic effect.Example-Beep or bark.

    Personification-The attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions especially as a rhetorical figure.

  5. Hyperbole: A hyperbole is like a simile or a metaphor but does not use like or as. It is more ridiculous and more exaggerated. Example: I had a ton of homework. In here they use ton to exaggerate.
    Personification: Personification is when you talk about something that is doing an action of a person and that something is not alive. Example: The stars danced playfully in the moonlit sky. In this sentence they use danced for the stars but stars can’t dance while people can.
    Onomatopoeia: Onomatopoeia is when you write a sound effect in words to make it sound like the actual sound. Example: Caleb was stepping in the puddles of water, Splish! Splash! Splish! Splash!. In this sentence i used splish splash to imitate the sounds of the feet stepping in the puddles.
    Idiom: An idiom is a phrase that means something different than what it’s literally saying. Example: To throw in the towel. This means that you have given up or stopped trying.

    Definition: An expression whose meaning is not predictable from the usual meanings of its constituent elements, as kick the bucket or hang one's head, or from the general grammatical rules of a language, as the table round for the table, and that is not constituent of a larger expression of like characteristics.
    Example:You are skating on thin ice.

    Metaphor: A figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance,as in "A mighty fortress is our god." Compare mixed metaphor, simile.
    Example: The test was a walk in the park.

    Onomatopoeia: The formation of a word, as a cuckoo or boom, by imitation of a sound made by or associated with its referent.
    Example:That sounds like (cuckoo boom).

    Personification: The attribution of a personal nature or character to inanimate objects or abstract notions, especially as a rhetorical figure.
    Example: The thunder grumbled like an old man.

    Simile: A figure of speech in which two unlike things are explicitly compared, as in " she is like a rose." Compare metaphor.
    Example: This test was like a piece of cake.

  11. for hyperbole it is a obvious exaggeration,like for example,i can eat 1 million cakes right now.You cant really eat that much cakes.
    for personification it is like a object or thing taking a place of a human being or person, for example, the fluffy cushion took hold of my face as I lied down on to it.a pillow can not hold a person but a person can hold a pillow.
    for idiom a idiom is like a expression that is not really predictable.Example is your on thin ice, when told that its usually meaning about to break someones temper and get on there nerves your not actually on thin ice.
    for onomatopoeia is like words being used for dramatic effects .Example is she ran with a big THUMP in her step.
